Site overview

St Margaret's Bay Windmill is a Grade II listed smock mill on South Foreland at St Margaret's at Cliffe. Built in 1929 by Holman Brothers of Canterbury for Sir William Bearswell, it was designed to generate domestic electricity for the attached house rather than to grind corn. The mill began generating in June 1929 and stopped in 1939, when the dynamo was removed.

During the Second World War the building was occupied by a special branch of the WRNS. Repairs were carried out in 1969 by Vincent Pargeter and Philip Lennard, including a new fantail and sail repairs. The mill remains a complete residential windmill and is recorded as the last traditional windmill built in Kent.

History

St Margaret's Bay Windmill stands on South Foreland above St Margaret's Bay. It was built in 1929 for Sir William Bearswell by Holman Brothers of Canterbury, the last windmill built by that firm. Unlike Kent's older corn mills, it was built from the outset as part of a residential complex and was designed to generate electricity for domestic use. It began generating in June 1929, driving a direct-current generator.

The mill is a three-storey, eight-sided smock mill on a single-storey base. It has a Kentish-style cap, four double patent sails on a cast-iron windshaft, fantail winding, and a six-bladed fantail. Its working function was electrical generation rather than milling. The dynamo was removed in 1939, ending the mill's generating role.

During the Second World War the windmill was occupied by a special branch of the WRNS. Later repair work was carried out in 1969 by Vincent Pargeter and Philip Lennard, including a new fantail and repairs to the sails. The mill has always been associated with residential use and remains a complete smock windmill structure on the White Cliffs landscape. It is Grade II listed and is recorded as the last new traditional windmill built in Kent.
