Site overview

The Old Windmill at Bickerstaffe is a former tower windmill on Church Road, now converted to domestic use. The Grade II listed structure, formerly listed as Bickerstaffe Windmill, is probably of late eighteenth-century date and is built of rendered brick with a conical slate roof. Its circular tower has a pronounced batter and three storeys, with segmental-headed openings and later domestic alterations.

The wider history of Bickerstaffe includes earlier references to a windmill in the manor, but the surviving listed tower represents the later wind-powered milling structure. It was in use until around the beginning of the twentieth century and had been decommissioned before 1920. The building now survives as a distinctive converted windmill tower within the Bickerstaffe village landscape.

History

The Old Windmill at Bickerstaffe, formerly listed as Bickerstaffe Windmill, is a surviving tower windmill on Church Road. The listed structure is probably late eighteenth century in date and is built of rendered brick. It has a circular plan, a pronounced batter to the sides, three storeys, and a conical slate roof. Segmental-headed openings remain in the tower, though the windows and domestic additions are later twentieth-century work.

The area has a longer windmill history. Bickerstaffe is recorded with windmill associations in earlier manorial history, and the Lancashire windmill lists identify Bickerstaffe Mill as a tower mill with an eighteenth-century date. The surviving structure is the windmill tower now preserved through conversion rather than as a working mechanical mill.

The working life of the mill continued into the modern period. A recent planning heritage statement records that The Old Windmill sat slightly outside the village for a long period, was in use until around the start of the twentieth century, and had been decommissioned before 1920. The building was later converted into a house. It was listed in 1968 and remains protected at Grade II. The conversion and later domestic changes have altered the building, but its circular battered tower remains legible as a former windmill. The Old Windmill now stands as a rare surviving windmill tower in the Bickerstaffe area, set among later village and residential development.
