Site overview

Damside Windmill, also known as Pilling Windmill and The Old Mill, is a tower windmill at Pilling. It was built in 1808 by Ralph Slater, replacing an earlier mill shown on Yates's 1786 map of Lancashire. The five-storey tower was converted to steam power in 1870, the sails were removed in 1887, and working use continued into the 1920s.

After dereliction, the mill was restored for residential use by the mid 1970s. A traditional wooden cap was restored in 2007, returning the building to its full height of about 73 feet. The converted tower remains one of the most prominent windmill survivals on the Fylde.

History

Damside Windmill stands at Pilling and is locally also known as Pilling Windmill or The Old Mill. An earlier windmill was marked on Yates's 1786 map of Lancashire, and the present tower was built in 1808 by Ralph Slater, the millwright associated with other Fylde windmills including Marsh Mill and Clifton Mill.

The mill was built as a substantial tower corn mill, rising five storeys above ground level and standing about 73 feet high. It worked by wind during its early life, then changed to steam power in 1870. The sails were removed in 1887, but milling continued into the 1920s using non-wind power. During the later nineteenth century, inventor Richard Gornall worked from an attached barn at the site.

After working use ended, the tower fell into disrepair. By the early 1960s it was described as an old windmill sold for conversion, and by 1975 it had been restored for use as a private residence. In 2007 the top of the windmill was restored with a traditional wooden cap, restoring its historic height and skyline profile. The building now survives as a converted tower mill with restored external form.
