Site overview

Wind Mill About 150 Yds South East of Castor Mill is the Historic England listed name for the former tower mill on Mill Road, Castor. The official list entry describes it as an early to mid nineteenth-century tower mill of rendered brick, with a circular tower. Only about three storeys remain and no machinery survives.

Windmill World identifies the same site as Castor tower mill and includes photographic records of the surviving tower. The consulted sources do not identify the builder, miller, original number of sails, machinery arrangement, final working date, or the date when the cap, sails and machinery were removed. The principal evidenced facts are its tower-mill type, early to mid nineteenth-century date, rendered brick construction, partial survival, and Grade II listed status.

It remains a reduced historic windmill structure near Castor Mill.

History

The former tower windmill at Castor is officially listed by Historic England as Wind Mill About 150 Yds South East of Castor Mill. It stands on Mill Road in the parish of Castor, and Windmill World identifies it as Castor tower mill. The listed building description gives the date as early to mid nineteenth century and describes the structure as a rendered brick circular tower mill.

By the time of listing, only about three storeys remained and no machinery survived. The official source does not record the original cap, sails, windshaft, stones or gearing, nor does it identify the builder, owner or working millers. Windmill World provides the specialist windmill identification and photographic record, but the consulted accessible sources give little further lifecycle detail.

The site is therefore best understood as a surviving reduced tower from a former wind-powered mill. Its cap and sails have gone, the machinery has been removed, and the surviving value lies in the retained masonry tower. The structure was listed at Grade II on 24 February 1982 under its descriptive Historic England name.
