Site overview

Little Marton Mill is a Grade II listed tower corn mill at Marton, Blackpool. It was built in 1838 by millwright John Hays for John Whalley, on the site of an earlier mill, and worked until September 1928. Cornelius Bagot later restored the mill and gave it in 1937 to the Allen Clarke Memorial Fund in memory of the local writer and windmill enthusiast C. Allen Clarke.

The mill was extensively renovated in 1987, with the boat-shaped cap replaced. It survives with four sails and an eight-bladed fantail, although some machinery is incomplete and parts are now at Lytham Windmill. In 2023 high winds damaged the sails.

History

Little Marton Mill stands at Marton, within modern Blackpool, and is one of the town's surviving historic windmills. It was built in 1838 by the millwright John Hays for John Whalley, on the site of a previous mill. The mill was designed for grinding corn and reflects the Fylde tower-mill type, with a broad stuccoed and whitewashed brick tower, four storeys including the basement, a boat-shaped cap, four sails, and fantail winding.

The mill worked until September 1928. Cornelius Bagot, one of its later millers, restored the building and in 1937 gave it to the Allen Clarke Memorial Fund as a memorial to C. Allen Clarke, the local teacher, writer, and windmill enthusiast. The mill was listed at Grade II in 1983. Major renovation followed in 1987, when the cap was replaced and the building was restored at substantial cost.

Little Marton Mill now survives as a conserved landmark beside a major route into Blackpool. Some original machinery remains in the upper parts of the mill, although the machinery is incomplete and some components are now at Lytham Windmill. In April 2023 high winds caused one sail to fall and loosened another, prompting inspection of the Grade II listed structure.
