Site overview

Staining Windmill is a former tower corn mill at Staining. Specialist windmill records identify it as a tower mill used for corn milling and later converted for domestic use. It was listed at Grade II on 9 June 1967.

Late twentieth-century archive photographs record the tower in derelict condition before later conversion. The building now survives as a house-converted tower mill, preserving the main masonry form of the former wind-powered corn mill within the village landscape. The site is therefore a physical survival of Staining's milling history rather than a restored working windmill.

History

Staining Windmill stands at Staining, inland from the Fylde coast. It was a tower corn mill, part of the district's group of masonry windmills serving rural settlements and farms before later changes in milling technology and transport altered local corn-grinding practice.

The surviving record identifies the building as a tower mill and confirms its later conversion for domestic use. The mill was listed at Grade II on 9 June 1967, recognising the special architectural and historic interest of the former windmill tower. Archive photographs from 1978 record the tower in derelict condition, while later windmill records and photographs show the house-converted survival.

Staining Windmill no longer operates as a wind-powered corn mill and is not recorded as retaining a full working cap, sails, or machinery. Its significance lies in the continued survival of the tower itself, adapted for residential use but still marking the former windmill site within the Staining landscape.
