Site overview

Doddington Windmill is a Grade II listed former tower mill on High Street, Doddington. Historic England records it as a mid nineteenth-century tower mill of tarred gault brick. The listed description identifies four storeys, an east-facing boarded entrance door, windows at each floor with replacement fixed lights, intact interior floors and stairs, three millstones and a stone nut.

It also records that the ogee domed cap had recently blown off, and that four sails were removed after 1940, when the mill was last in use. Windmill World identifies the same site as Doddington tower mill and notes a truncated tower with a new roof around 2012. Industrial History Online records the site as listed Grade II.

The surviving structure is a reduced tower-mill building rather than a complete working windmill.

History

Doddington Windmill stands on the north side of High Street in Doddington, Cambridgeshire. Historic England records the official listed name as Doddington Windmill and identifies it as a Grade II listed building. The list entry describes it as a mid nineteenth-century tower mill built of tarred gault brick.

It had four storeys, with a boarded entrance door facing east and windows at each floor fitted with replacement fixed lights. The official description records that the interior floors and stairs were intact, and that three millstones and a stone nut remained inside. The same description states that the ogee domed cap had blown off in a gale recently and that the four sails had been removed after 1940, when the mill was last in use.

Windmill World identifies the site as Doddington tower mill and records its present condition as a truncated tower, with a new roof fitted around 2012. Industrial History Online also records Doddington Windmill at High Street, Doddington, with Historic England list number 1126577 and Grade II listed status. The consulted sources do not identify the builder, first owner or working millers.

The surviving evidence nevertheless establishes a mid nineteenth-century tower mill with some internal fabric recorded at listing, followed by loss of cap and sails, reduction in windmill completeness, and survival as a listed tower-mill structure.
