Site overview

Spital Hill Mill, also known as Highfield Windmill or Pickwell's Mill, is a former tower corn mill at Gainsborough in Lincolnshire. It stood near the top of Spital Hill, off the Corringham Road. The mill was one of a pair of tower mills in the same ownership and had five roller-reefing sails and three pairs of stones in 1816.

It was refitted with patent sails from a Cleethorpes mill in 1870 and worked until 1927, when the sails were removed. The machinery was removed in 1976 and taken to a mill at Horncastle. The tower remains derelict, preserving a significant remnant of Gainsborough's wind-powered milling history.

History

Spital Hill Mill stood near the top of Spital Hill, off the Corringham Road in Gainsborough. It is also recorded as Highfield Windmill and Pickwell's Mill. The mill was one of a pair of tower mills in the same ownership and worked as a corn mill.

In 1816 the mill had five roller-reefing sails and three pairs of stones. In 1870 it was refitted with patent sails taken from a mill at Cleethorpes. The mill continued to work into the twentieth century, and the 1906 Ordnance Survey 25-inch map marked it as Highfield Windmill (Corn). Kelly's Directory of Lincolnshire in 1885 recorded Richard Anderson as a wind miller at Summer Hill, close to Spital Hill, placing the mill within a documented local milling community.

Spital Hill Mill worked until 1927, when its sails were removed. It then became derelict. Photographic records preserve several stages of this decline, including views with cap and machinery, derelict with windshaft and brakewheel, and later as a capless tower. In 1976 the mill was dismantled and the machinery was taken to a mill at Horncastle. The derelict tower survives with the curb and most of the rooms in place. It remains a strong physical reminder of Gainsborough's former tower-mill landscape.
