Site overview

Damgate Mill was a tower mill at Holbeach. It was built in about 1816 and raised by two further storeys in 1867. The mill worked by wind until 1944, after which its working wind-powered role ended.

It was demolished in the 1960s, but later local heritage records noted that the foundations and several millstones were still visible in 1982. Damgate Mill was one of several Holbeach windmills, alongside Tindall's Mill, Barrington Gate Mill, and earlier smock mills in the wider parish. The site is now chiefly significant as a recorded former tower-mill site preserving physical traces of Holbeach's wind-powered corn-milling history.

History

Damgate Mill was built at Holbeach in about 1816. It was a tower mill, part of the group of windmills serving the agricultural market town and surrounding South Holland fenland. The tower was enlarged in 1867, when it was raised by two further storeys, increasing its scale and capacity.

The mill worked by wind until 1944. That date marks the end of its wind-powered working life, although the building remained for a further period after milling ceased. Damgate Mill was eventually demolished in the 1960s. By 1982 the foundations and several millstones were still visible, preserving physical traces of the former mill despite the loss of the tower.

The site forms part of a dense local milling landscape. Holbeach had several recorded windmills, including Tindall's Mill or Barrington Gate Mill and earlier smock mills at Holbeach Hurn and Satterday Bridge. Damgate Mill is therefore an important recorded element of Holbeach's wind-powered milling history, even though its survival is now represented by archaeological and remnant fabric rather than by a standing complete tower.
