Site overview

Brunswick Mill is a Grade II listed tower mill on Wisbech Road, Long Sutton. It was built in 1817 with four sails and later remodelled in the nineteenth century, when it was fitted with six sails. The listed building record identifies the structure as Brunswick Mill.

It ceased milling in the 1930s. The sails and cap were removed in 1973, and later records describe the mill as derelict. Photographs from the 1960s and 1970s recorded the mill with windshaft, brakewheel, and six sails, while later images show its reduced condition.

Brunswick Mill is one of Long Sutton's two notable surviving tower-mill structures, alongside Harrison's Mill on Roman Bank.

History

Brunswick Mill stands on Wisbech Road at Long Sutton. It was built in 1817 and originally had four sails. During later nineteenth-century remodelling it was fitted with six sails, placing it within the Lincolnshire tradition of large multi-sailed tower mills. The mill worked as a corn mill serving the South Holland agricultural landscape.

Milling ceased at Brunswick Mill in the 1930s. The mill nevertheless retained significant windmill fabric for several decades. Photographic registers record it as derelict with windshaft, brakewheel, and six sails in September 1966. The sails and cap were removed in 1973. Later photographs from the 1970s and 2000s recorded the mill in its post-working state, and a 2007 photograph described it as completely derelict.

The tower is protected as a Grade II listed building. Although the mill no longer survives as a complete working structure, Brunswick Mill remains an important Long Sutton landmark and a reduced survival of a six-sailed Lincolnshire tower mill.
