Site overview

Alkborough Tower Mill is a former tower corn mill on West Halton Lane, Alkborough. A post mill stood here until at least 1853, and the later tower mill was built on the roundhouse base of the former post mill in 1855 or around 1860. The mill worked by wind until about 1916 and then continued for a short period by engine power.

The tower was later incorporated into a private dwelling. The surviving building retains two millstones in situ on the first floor, reused timbers from the earlier post mill, and two posts made from a common sail whip.

History

Alkborough Tower Mill stands on West Halton Lane on the edge of Alkborough. The site has a layered mill history. A post mill stood there until at least 1853, and the present tower mill was later built on the roundhouse base of that earlier mill. The Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology gives 1855 for the tower, while other summary accounts place the tower around 1860.

The mill was built of red brick and tar and worked as a cereal or corn mill. It was wind-powered until about 1916, after which it continued for a short period with engine power. This change allowed milling to continue briefly after the end of wind working.

The tower was later converted into a private dwelling, with the conversion recorded from 2009. The surviving structure retains notable internal evidence of the earlier milling site. Two millstones remain in situ on the first floor, floors include reused timber from the former post mill, and two posts are made from a common sail whip. Alkborough Tower Mill is therefore both a surviving tower mill and a rare site where the earlier post-mill phase is still materially reflected in the later building.
