Site overview

Willingham Mill was a tower windmill at Kexby in Lincolnshire. Specialist mill sources record it as a Kexby tower mill, while Lincolnshire windmill lists distinguish it from nearby Upton Mill, Subscription Mill, and Britannia Mills. The mill belonged to the rural milling landscape east of Gainsborough and south-east of Kexby village.

It is recorded as standing in the 1930s and gone by the mid twentieth century, leaving a documented former windmill site rather than a complete surviving mill.

History

Kexby had several windmill sites, including Willingham Mill, Upton Mill or Subscription Mill, and Britannia Mills. Willingham Mill is recorded by specialist mill sources as a tower mill at Kexby. The mill formed part of the agricultural milling landscape of the Trent-side and West Lindsey villages east of Gainsborough.

Its known record is strongest for identification and later survival. It was still standing in the 1930s, but had gone by 1953. This places the mill within the widespread twentieth-century decline of Lincolnshire tower mills, when many ceased work, lost sails and machinery, or were demolished.

The site is therefore best recorded as a former tower windmill site at Kexby, known through specialist mill records and historic windmill lists rather than by a preserved standing tower.
