Site overview
Mattishall Mill Street tower windmill was built in 1862 for Edward Sendall, replacing the smock mill he had already been working. The supplied coordinates match Mattishall rather than East Dereham. Norfolk Mills describes a six-storey red-brick tower with a second-floor stage, Norfolk boat-shaped cap, petticoat, gallery and six-bladed left-handed fan.
Four double-shuttered sails drove two pairs of stones, a flour mill and an oat crusher. The mill was working by October 1862 under Thomas Sendall, and by 1876 he was in partnership with George Reeve. Financial difficulty led to mortgagee sale advertisements from 1876, and the mill was offered for sale or let repeatedly.
William Lant Duffield leased the mill in 1893. In 1916 he recalled that the shaft and sails had been blown out after winding-gear failure and neglect.

History
Mattishall Mill Street tower windmill stood in Mattishall and is the site matched by the supplied coordinates, rather than East Dereham. Norfolk Mills records that it was built in 1862 for Edward Sendall, a relation of Richard Sendall, who had sold the nearby Mill Road post mill in 1855. The new tower mill replaced the smock mill Edward Sendall had already been working and may have been built in response to the nearby Mill Road tower mill.
The mill stood in what later became Mill Street and was sometimes known as the Black Mill. It was a six-storey red-brick tower with a stage on the second floor. Its Norfolk boat-shaped cap had a petticoat, gallery and six-bladed left-handed fan.
Four double-shuttered sails, each with nine bays of three shutters, provided about 20 horsepower to drive two pairs of stones, a flour mill and an oat crusher. The mill had begun work by October 1862 and was run by Thomas Sendall, who rented it from Edward Sendall. By 1876 Thomas Sendall was in partnership with George Reeve, and the partnership had run into financial difficulty.
A mortgagee sale notice that year offered the freehold messuage, stable, hay house, cart lodge, storehouse, yards, garden and land, together with the brick tower windmill, going gear, machinery, sack tackling, mill stones, flour mills, sails and appurtenances. Further notices in 1884 offered the dwelling house, premises and brick tower windmill, then occupied by D. J. Reeve. In 1893 William Lant Duffield leased the mill for four years.
He later recorded that the mill had been out of use for about two years before he took it and that he obtained parts from the nearby Mill Road tower mill to repair it. He described it as a six-floor mill with sails about 30 ft by 9 ft, driving two pairs of stones. Duffield left Mattishall in 1896.
In a later recollection he stated that the shaft and sails were blown out in 1916 because the winding gear was out of order and the mill had been neglected.
