Site overview

Neatishead towermill was a brick corn mill recorded as a tower mill by Norfolk Mills and Windmill World. It replaced an earlier Neatishead postmill, which had worked south of the village in a farmyard and used common sails to power a single pair of French burr stones. The towermill was advertised to let as a substantially built brick tower windmill driving two pairs of stones, with flour mill, jumper, machinery and complete going gears, together with an adjoining dwelling house.

The advertisement noted that Neatishead was within a short distance of the navigation to Yarmouth and that the tenant could also take ten acres of arable land if required. Windmill World identifies the site as a corn tower mill and links it to the Mills Archive record for Neatishead. Later photographic records show it as a disused windmill near Neatishead.

History

Neatishead towermill is recorded by Norfolk Mills as the successor to an earlier Neatishead postmill. The postmill had stood south of the village in a farmyard and worked in the eighteenth century, possibly earlier. It used common sails to power one pair of 4 ft 10 in French burr stones. Norfolk Mills states that this earlier postmill was replaced by a new towermill in the first quarter of the nineteenth century.

The towermill itself was advertised to let as a good and substantially built brick tower windmill in Neatishead. The notice described it as driving two pairs of stones and equipped with flour mill, jumper, machinery and complete going gears. A dwelling house adjoined the mill, and the advertisement stated that the tenant could be accommodated with ten acres of arable land if required. It also noted the site's short distance from the navigation to Yarmouth, a practical advantage for trade.

Windmill World records the site as Neatishead tower mill and identifies its function as a corn mill. The entry links the site to the Mills Archive database as Tower mill, Neatishead, and later images identify the building as an old or disused windmill near Neatishead. The consulted sources did not provide a full operator chronology, precise construction date, final working date or detailed conversion history for this tower mill, so the record is limited to the identified corn-mill function, surviving tower-mill status and the letting particulars that describe its working equipment.
