Site overview

Ludham High tower mill, at The Mill House, was a brick tower corn mill in Ludham. A tower windmill was advertised at Ludham in 1761 with a dwelling house and outhouse, while the surviving heritage record describes the brick tower mill at The Mill House as built in 1823. It worked until the late nineteenth century, when the sails were removed.

The tower was later adapted for use as a water tower. The surviving structure is associated with The Mill House and represents the remains of Ludham's former wind-powered corn milling landscape rather than an operating mill. The available evidence identifies its broad working life, later loss of sails and subsequent reuse, but detailed machinery records and final milling date remain limited.

History

Ludham High tower mill stood at The Mill House in Ludham. A brick tower windmill at Ludham was advertised in 1761 with a dwelling house and outhouse, showing a long-established windmill presence in the village. The surviving recorded tower mill at The Mill House is described as a brick tower mill built in 1823.

It worked as a corn mill through the nineteenth century. The sails were removed in the late nineteenth century, marking the end of its wind-powered working form. After milling use ended, the tower was adapted for a different practical role as a water tower.

The current significance of the site lies in the surviving brick tower and its reuse, rather than in complete machinery or restored sails. The sources identify the main chronology of construction, operation, sail removal and later conversion, but do not provide a detailed account of the millers, exact internal machinery, or the final date of commercial milling. The tower remains part of the built fabric at The Mill House and records the former presence of wind-powered corn milling in Ludham.
