Site overview

North Walsham Yarmouth Road post mill was also known as Youngman's Mill or Field Mill. It was shown as Field Mill on the 1890 Ordnance Survey map. The mill buck stood on a two-storey roundhouse, had a gable-end porch, and was turned into the wind with a tail pole.

Four double-shuttered sails, each with eight bays of three shutters, were struck by rack and pinion. The site was associated with a dwelling house, mill buildings, yards, gardens, and agricultural land. Sale notices and directory entries show active milling from the eighteenth century through the nineteenth century, including the Youngman family.

The mill was photographed in the early twentieth century, but the identified evidence does not establish a precise final demolition date.

History

The Yarmouth Road post mill in North Walsham was known as Youngman's Mill or Field Mill. It was shown under the Field Mill name on the 1890 Ordnance Survey map. The mill buck stood on a two-storey roundhouse and had a gable-end porch.

It was turned into the wind with a tail pole. The four double-shuttered sails each had eight bays of three shutters and were struck by rack and pinion. The site had a long milling history.

In 1761 a North Walsham windmill was offered for sale with other milling property. In 1804 a North Walsham estate was advertised with a dwelling house, barn, a capital windmill, granaries, machinery adapted for preparing and dressing oatmeal and flour, and ten acres of arable land. William Pitcher was associated with the mill in the early nineteenth century, and after his death the property was advertised with a dwelling house, buildings, corn windmill, and about 22 acres of land.

The 1837 tithe award recorded Richard Youngman as owner and Isaac Youngman as occupier of house, mill buildings, yards, and gardens at the Yarmouth Road post mill plot. Later notices and directories record the Youngman family and other millers through the nineteenth century. The mill was still a prominent photographic subject around 1903 to 1910.

The available material records the mill's equipment and working associations, but does not give a secure final demolition date.
