Site overview
Thetford Mundford Road post mill stood on the north-west side of the town. It used four patent sails to drive two pairs of French burr stones and a jumper, with the stones arranged head and tail in the mill buck. The brake wheel was nine feet in diameter and the fantail measured seven feet six inches.
The site is shown on early mapping, including Ogilby's Britannia in 1675, Faden's map of 1797, Bryant's map of 1826 and the 1843 tithe map. Millers associated with the site included members of the Oldman family. In 1844 the tithe award recorded Lord Ashburton as owner and Henry Oldman as occupier.
The mill was taken down in April 1858, and its materials and machinery were advertised for sale by auction in May 1858.

History
Thetford Mundford Road post mill stood on the north-west side of Thetford. It was a post mill using four patent sails to power two pairs of French burr stones and a jumper. The stones were set head and tail, with one pair at the front of the buck and the other at the back.
The brake wheel was nine feet in diameter, and the fantail was seven feet six inches in diameter. A windmill is shown on Ogilby's Britannia map of the King's Lynn to Harwich road in 1675, and the site is also marked on Faden's 1797 map, Bryant's 1826 map, Greenwood's 1834 map and early Ordnance Survey mapping. William Oldman was recorded as miller in the early nineteenth century, and later directory entries placed him at Oldman's Lane.
The 1844 tithe award for Thetford St Peter recorded the owner as Alexander, Lord Ashburton and the occupier as Henry Oldman, with the holding described as mill and land. In April 1858 the mill was dismantled on behalf of the owner, the Hon. F. Baring.
In May 1858 the materials and machinery of the large oak-post windmill were advertised for sale by auction near the railway station. The sale listed the oak post, cross-trees and spurs, crown tree with cast-iron head and plate, wind shaft with cast-iron poll end, patent-sail vanes, striking gear, two pairs of French stones, regulators, nine-foot brake wheel, jumper and timber. No standing mill structure is recorded after dismantling.
