Site overview
Mutton's Mill, also known as Manor Farm Mill, stands on Halvergate Marshes. It was built in the early 1830s, replacing an earlier mill nearby, and was later rebuilt or remodelled during its working life. The mill ceased work by 1946 and soon became derelict.
By the early 1970s it had lost its cap and fantail, although parts of the sails remained. In 1974 or 1975 it was acquired by boatbuilders who carried out preservation work. Later records describe the tower, internal machinery, floors, cap base, windshaft, and cap frame as surviving during repair.
The mill has since been restored with renewed cap and fantail and remains a prominent drainage-mill survivor in the Halvergate Marshes Conservation Area.

History
Mutton's Mill stands east of Halvergate on Halvergate Marshes and is also known as Manor Farm Mill. It was built in the early 1830s to replace an earlier drainage mill on a nearby site. Later in its working life it was rebuilt or remodelled, possibly by the millwright responsible for Berney Arms Mill in 1865.
The mill worked as a marsh-drainage windpump, raising water from the drained grazing-marsh landscape. It had ceased work by 1946 and soon became derelict. By the early 1970s the cap and fantail had gone, although parts of the sails still remained.
In 1974 or 1975 the mill was acquired by two boatbuilders, who preserved the structure. Repair records describe the tower, internal machinery, floors, cap base, windshaft, and cap frame as surviving, with the windshaft and cap frame roofed over during works. Later photographic and survey records describe Mutton's Mill as preserved with a new cap and fantail, and with the internal scoop wheel visible through an arch in the tower wall.
The mill remains one of the notable surviving drainage mills of Halvergate Marshes.
