St Benet's Level Drainage Mill stands on Horning marshes on the opposite side of the River Thurne from St Benet's Abbey. It is a four-storey drainage tower mill built in the late eighteenth century and associated with the St Benet's Level drainage system. The mill retained its drainage machinery, with an external turbine, and was restored in 1976, when the bevel gears were replaced while other machinery remained intact.
Later public mill listings describe it as restored with cap and sails, though without shutters. It is Grade II* listed and remains a prominent riverside drainage-mill survival in the Thurne landscape. History
St Benet's Level Drainage Mill stands on Horning marshes, across the River Thurne from the remains of St Benet's Abbey. It was built as a drainage tower mill for the St Benet's Level and is recorded as a four-storey mill dating from the late eighteenth century. Its role was to pump water from the low-lying marsh drainage system, not to grind corn.
The mill is important because its machinery survived substantially intact. The internal machinery drove an external turbine housed in an iron casing. In 1976 the mill was restored, with the bevel gears replaced while the rest of the machinery remained.
Later records describe the mill as restored with cap and sails, although without shutters. The mill is Grade II* listed and survives as a prominent working-form drainage mill in the Thurne valley landscape.
