Site overview

Easton on the Hill windmill, also known as Old Dexter's Mill, stands south-west of Stamford in Northamptonshire. It is recorded as a tower corn mill and is one of the surviving windmill structures in the county. Historic photographic and archive records describe the mill as derelict, standing on a small hill, overgrown, without roof or sails.

Modern photographic evidence from 2006 continues to show the disused tower as a visible roadside landmark from the A43. The available evidence identifies the mill type, corn-milling function, survival as a disused tower and its association with Easton on the Hill, but gives little secure detail on its construction date, millwright, machinery, ownership sequence or final working date.

History

Easton on the Hill windmill stands at the northern edge of Northamptonshire, south-west of Stamford. It is recorded as a tower mill used for corn milling and is also identified in archive material as Old Dexter's Mill. The surviving structure is a disused tower rather than a restored working mill.

Photographic records describe a derelict tower windmill standing on a small hill, overgrown with weeds and without a roof or sails. The tower remains a familiar roadside feature from the A43. A 2006 photographic record shows the mill still standing but disused.

The researched sources establish the identity and location of the site and confirm its function as a tower corn mill, but they do not provide a secure construction date, named millwright, detailed machinery inventory, named miller sequence or closure date. The site is therefore best recorded as a surviving derelict tower mill at Easton on the Hill, with its main evidenced character lying in the survival of the tower itself.
