Site overview

Kingsthorpe Windmill stands on Windmill Terrace and is now known as The Windmill House. It is recorded as a tower corn mill and was listed Grade II in 1976. The listed description identifies an early nineteenth-century altered windmill, no longer used as a mill, with a three-storey battered coursed-rubble tower and a parapet hiding the roof.

Later domestic additions stand to the east and west. Archive photographs and modern property records confirm its residential identity. The accessible evidence establishes the former milling function, the surviving tower, protected status and later conversion, while detailed machinery, miller chronology and final working date are not securely identified.

History

Kingsthorpe Windmill stands at Windmill Terrace, Kingsthorpe, on the northern side of Northampton. It is recorded as a tower corn mill and survives as The Windmill House. The listed-building description identifies it as an early nineteenth-century altered windmill, no longer in mill use.

The surviving tower is a three-storey battered structure of coursed rubble, with a parapet hiding the roof. Modern casement and sash windows have been inserted, and one-storey and one-and-a-half-storey domestic additions stand to the east and west. A Mills Archive record identifies the structure as a tower mill at Kingsthorpe, while photographic and property records confirm its present residential form.

The building was designated Grade II on 22 January 1976. The available records do not provide a detailed account of the original sails, cap, stones, ownership sequence or closure date. The site is therefore best recorded as a protected and converted former tower corn mill, now surviving within domestic use.
