Site overview

Sulgrave Tower Mill stands between Sulgrave and Culworth and survives as a converted former tower mill. Local history material describes the tower of the windmill as visible from much of the village and now used as a private house. Windmill records identify it as a tower mill converted to domestic use, with modern photographic records from 2009 showing the converted structure.

The available evidence establishes its survival, tower-mill type and later house conversion, but provides little detail on its construction date, machinery, miller sequence or final working date. The site is therefore best recorded as a surviving converted tower mill, with its present character defined by private residential reuse rather than restored milling operation.

History

Sulgrave Tower Mill is recorded as a surviving tower mill at Sulgrave, with its tower now converted to a private house. Local history material describes two mills in Sulgrave, a windmill and a watermill, and states that the tower of the windmill can still be seen from most parts of the village. It places the windmill about halfway between Sulgrave and Culworth.

Modern windmill inventories identify the site as a tower mill converted to domestic use, and a 2009 photographic record shows the converted windmill. The accessible evidence does not provide a secure construction date, named millwright, sail type, stone arrangement, ownership sequence or final working date. It also does not identify surviving internal machinery.

The documented history is consequently concentrated on the site's former windmill identity and present survival through residential conversion. The tower remains the key surviving element of the former wind-powered milling site.
