Site overview

Wootton Windmill stands at Stratford Drive, Wootton, on the southern side of Northampton. It is recorded as a tower corn mill, later truncated and converted to a house. The surviving structure is protected as a Grade II listed building under the name Remains of Windmill.

Historic photographic records from the early twentieth century show the disused windmill, while later records identify the converted remains at Stratford Drive. The accessible evidence confirms the former corn-milling function, tower-mill type, later truncation, domestic conversion and listed status, but gives little secure detail on its construction date, machinery, named millers or final working date. The site is therefore best recorded as a surviving altered former tower mill rather than a working or restored milling structure.

History

Wootton Windmill stood at Wootton, now within the southern edge of Northampton. It is recorded as a tower mill used for corn milling. The tower later lost its full working form and is described in modern windmill records as truncated and converted to domestic use.

Historic photographs taken between about 1910 and 1935 show a disused windmill, probably at Wootton or Hardingstone, and later photographic records show the remains of the windmill at Stratford Drive, Wootton. The building is protected as Grade II under the listed name Remains of Windmill. The accessible record does not provide a detailed machinery inventory, sail arrangement, stone arrangement, named millwright, miller sequence or final working date.

The secure account is therefore centred on the former tower corn mill, its survival as truncated remains, its later conversion as part of a dwelling, and its recognised listed status.
