Site overview

Windmill Hill near Whittington is an uncertain windmill site rather than a well-documented surviving mill. Local research identifies the hill between Whittington and Hopwas, at the end of Windmill Lane, as a possible former windmill location. The name is shown on late nineteenth- to early twentieth-century Ordnance Survey mapping, and the site has been described as a good windmill location.

However, the same research states that no firm evidence for a windmill was found on earlier maps checked back to 1815. A later note refers to an English Heritage PastScape entry for a post-medieval windmill mound, but no visible tower remains are described in the available material. The site should therefore be treated as a lightly evidenced windmill place-name and possible mound site, not as a confirmed standing tower mill.

History

The Windmill Hill site near Whittington is recorded in local research as a possible former windmill location in the fields between Whittington and Hopwas. The place-name Windmill Hill appears on the 1899-1903 Ordnance Survey map, with Windmill Lane nearby. The location is described as one of the highest points in the area and a plausible position for a windmill, but the available local research found little direct evidence for a mill.

The same account states that no windmill was found on maps checked as far back as 1815, leaving open whether the place-name preserved memory of an earlier structure or reflected a different origin. A later local note refers to an English Heritage PastScape record for a post-medieval windmill mound and suggests that any mill may have been a brick tower windmill, but that suggestion is not supported by surviving structural evidence in the consulted sources. No standing tower, machinery, operational history, or closure date has been identified.
