Site overview
Barnack Windmill is a Grade II listed tower mill on Stamford Road at Barnack. Built around 1797, it is a five-storey coursed-stone tower mill with battered walls, a metal-clad ogee cap, surviving rail arms, part of the fantail, and a complete set of internal machinery. The mill last worked in 1914 and was restored between 1959 and 1962.
Photographic records show the mill disused with stocks in the 1930s and 1950s, and later preserved with stocks and replacement cap. The survival of the cap, machinery, and stone tower makes Barnack Windmill an unusually complete example of a late eighteenth-century tower corn mill in the limestone landscape west of Peterborough.

History
Barnack Windmill stands on Stamford Road at Barnack. It is a five-storey tower mill built of coursed stone, with battered walls and small flat-arched openings. The listed description dates the mill to about 1797 and records it as a tower mill with a metal-clad ogee cap, remaining arms of the rails, part of the fantail, and a complete set of machinery intact.
The mill was built for wind-powered corn milling and continued in use until 1914. Photographic records show the mill after its working life, including views in 1932 and 1935 when it was disused with stocks and the original cap. Later views from 1950 show a similar condition, with part of one whip broken. Internal photographic records document important machinery including the brake wheel, great spur wheel, drive shafts, stone floor, stone nut, quant, and a pair of stones.
Restoration took place between 1959 and 1962. The mill was listed at Grade II in March 1962, and later photographs record it preserved with stocks and a replacement cap. The adjacent mill house was separately listed in 1982. Barnack Windmill now survives as a preserved stone tower mill with substantial internal machinery, retaining much of the technical character of a late eighteenth-century wind-powered corn mill.
