Site overview

Middle Mill at Mildenhall was a wind-powered smock drainage mill. The mill stood on the fenland edge and worked as a pumping mill rather than as a corn mill. Its upper smock structure has been lost, but the base survives.

By the late twentieth century the remains included the base with a truncated smock, converted to domestic use.

History

Middle Mill at Mildenhall was a smock drainage mill. It belonged to the group of wind-powered pumps that served the fenland landscape around Mildenhall. The mill worked by wind as a drainage mill rather than as a corn mill.

The original superstructure was later reduced, leaving the base as the surviving element. By 1977 the base and truncated smock had been converted to domestic use. The surviving base remains the principal visible reminder of Middle Mill.
