History

The Clare post mill at TL 762 446 was one of the windmill sites associated with the town. It was a post mill, with the mill body carried on a central post and turned to face the wind. The mill was in existence by 1783.

Its known working history ends with its destruction on 6 November 1875, when it was blown down. No complete mill structure survives, and the later treatment of any remaining base, timberwork, or machinery has not been established.
