Site overview

New Mill is a Grade II listed post mill at Tadworth. It was probably built in the mid-eighteenth century and was marked on Rocque's map of 1762. The mill worked by wind until 1902, latterly with steam assistance.

It lost two sails in 1893 and the remaining pair in 1921. The mill was damaged during the Second World War and repaired in 1950. It has a two-storey roundhouse, four spring patent sails, a cast-iron windshaft, tailpole winding, and two pairs of millstones.

History

New Mill at Tadworth is a surviving post mill on a two-storey roundhouse. Its exact construction date has not been established, but it is thought to have been built in the mid-eighteenth century. A windmill was mentioned in 1755 and marked on Rocque's map of 1762.

The mill lost two sails in 1893 and continued working by wind until 1902, latterly with steam assistance. A second post mill stood close by until 1890. The remaining pair of sails fell off during a drought in 1921.

The mill was damaged by a bomb in 1941 and again by a flying bomb in 1944, and repairs were carried out in 1950. The mill has a cast-iron windshaft, tailpole winding, a cast-iron brake wheel, two pairs of millstones, and the only two-storey post-mill roundhouse in Surrey. The building is listed Grade II.
