Site overview

Over Mill is a restored tower windmill on Longstanton Road, Over. Built in the mid nineteenth century, it is a tarred red-brick mill with a restored cap, fantail, patent sails, and surviving internal machinery. The mill was derelict by the mid twentieth century before being bought in 1960 by Graham Chris Wilson, whose restoration work returned it to working order in 1969.

It is listed at Grade II and is also a scheduled monument. Interior records from 1981 show working milling machinery, including a dressing machine, and later survey work recorded the mill in good condition and full working order.

History

Over Mill stands on Longstanton Road and is a mid nineteenth-century tower windmill. It was built around 1853 by Samuel Froment, using materials from an earlier smock mill bought from Joseph Gifford in 1851. The listed building description dates the tower to about 1860 and describes it as a tarred red-brick tower mill of four stages, with a restored aluminium conical cap, fantail, and patent sails.

The mill declined after its working life and was derelict by 1950. In 1960 Graham Chris Wilson bought the mill and began the long restoration that has defined its modern history. He fitted patent sails and a pair of stones from the derelict mill at Upwell, rebuilt major elements of the cap, brake wheel, and internal timberwork, and returned the mill to work in October 1969. This restoration made Over Mill one of the most significant working windmill survivals in Cambridgeshire.

The listed structure retains much original machinery, including two pairs of grinding stones. Historic England photographic records from 1981 show the interior with the mill in working use, including the dressing machine. Later survey work recorded the mill in good condition and full working order, while noting the importance of protecting its wind flow from nearby development. Over Mill is both Grade II listed and a scheduled monument, reflecting its architectural, mechanical, and industrial heritage significance.
