Site overview

Smart's Mill, also known as Shelley's Mill, was a smock corn mill at Lewes. It originated as the former Town Mill, built in 1802 and moved to a new site around 1819. The mill was demolished in 1922, but the base survived.

The remains preserve the lower part of the relocated smock mill.

History

Smart's Mill, also known as Shelley's Mill, developed from the former Lewes Town Mill. The smock mill was moved from its original town site around 1819 to a new site near the later Lewes Prison. It worked as a smock corn mill during the nineteenth century and retained the identity of the earlier public subscription mill after relocation.

The upper mill was demolished in 1922. The base survived after demolition and remained visible as the principal physical remnant of the relocated mill.
