Tower mill erected

Round Hill Mill, also known as Cutress's Mill, was a brick tower mill on Round Hill Road, Brighton. John Lashmar and John Ingledew erected it around 1834. The mill was an unusually large five-floor tower mill, about 80 feet high, with a copper-domed cap and three pairs of millstones, later increased to four.
Charles Cutress bought it in 1879, and by about 1880 steam power also worked one pair of stones. The sweeps were removed in 1908, milling ceased in 1910, and dismantling began in 1913.

History
Round Hill Mill stood at the top of Round Hill Road in Brighton, east of St Saviour's Church. John Lashmar and John Ingledew erected the cement-faced brick tower mill around 1834. It was a large five-floor tower mill with a broad base for storing sacks of corn, a copper-domed cap, walls more than two feet thick at the base and a height of about 80 feet.
The sweeps were 32 feet long, and the mill was built with three pairs of millstones and space for a fourth. It traded as Ingledew & Co. In 1852 Jonathan Streeter's bankruptcy led to the dissolution of the firm, and the mill had closed within about twenty years of its erection. It was later let to William Welfare Ford and then to Thomas Turner Brazier.
Charles Cutress bought the mill in 1879, and it became known as Cutress's Tower Mill. A fourth pair of stones was installed, and around 1880 a steam engine worked them while the sweeps continued to drive the older stones. The mill remained capable of working by wind and steam in 1900.
The sweeps were removed in 1908, and the mill ceased working in 1910. Dismantling began on 17 March 1913 and was completed in April, with the site cleared by 16 May.
